Woodside Energy (WDS.ASX) — FY2025 Full-Year Results Analysis
Woodside's FY2025 result was a quality beat — record production of 198.8 MMboe and disciplined cost management delivered earnings and dividends ahead of consensus, even as softer commodity prices and a heavy construction pipeline keep most analysts firmly on the sidelines.
Execution Beats Expectations. Caution Persists. Woodside Energy delivered a solid full-year result for FY2025, beating consensus earnings and dividend forecasts despite a challenging commodity price environment. Record production of 198.8 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMboe) — driven by the exceptional ramp-up of the Sangomar field in Senegal — more than offset a 5% decline in average realised prices to $60.2 per barrel. Underlying net profit after tax came in at $2.649 billion, with earnings per share of approximately 143 cents against an analyst consensus of 130 cents, a 10% beat. Despite the result, analyst sentiment remains measured. Five of six brokers covering the stock maintain Neutral or Hold ratings, with a consensus target price of $25.73 implying modest downside from current levels. The cautious tone reflects execution risk across a significant pipeline of major projects under construction, near-term LNG market volatility, and 2026 production guidance that disappointed some analysts. The bull case hinges on successful delivery of Scarborough LNG — targeting first gas in Q4 2026 — and continued progress at Louisiana LNG in the United States. RESULTS SNAPSHOT Underlying NPAT came in at $2.649 billion against a consensus expectation of roughly $2.40 billion. EPS of approximately 143 cents beat the 130 cents forecast by 10%, while the full-year dividend of 112 US cents per share exceeded the 102.8 cents consensus by 9%. Production of 198.8 MMboe was a record, beating expectations of around 190 MMboe, and EBITDA of $9.277 billion at a 71% margin was ahead of the roughly $8.8 billion the market anticipated. Revenue at $12.984 billion came in broadly in line, as volume growth offset the headwind from a lower average realised price of $60.2 per barrel against an expected $62. Unit production costs of $7.8/boe — down 4% year-on-year — also beat estimates. Operating cash flow surged 23% to $7.192 billion, and free cash flow swung to $1.889 billion from negative $293 million in FY2024. KEY PERFORMANCE DRIVERS Sangomar: The Standout Performer The Sangomar oil field in Senegal was the defining story of FY2025. Achieving 98.7% reliability and operating at its 100,000 barrel-per-day nameplate capacity for most of the year, Sangomar contributed $1.702 billion in EBITDA — more than double its partial-year contribution of $849 million in FY2024 when production commenced mid-year. The field also added 27.9 MMboe to Woodside's 1P reserves, reinforcing its long-term value. Volume Offsets Price Total group production of 198.8 MMboe set a new company record. This volume growth was critical in offsetting a material headwind from lower commodity prices: Brent crude averaged approximately $69 per barrel in 2025 versus $81 in 2024, compressing Woodside's average realised price from $63.4/boe to $60.2/boe. Total revenue declined only marginally — about 1% to $12.984 billion — demonstrating the value of volume-driven earnings resilience. Cost Discipline Unit production costs fell 4% year-on-year to $7.8/boe, reflecting economies of scale and operational efficiency initiatives. Woodside has maintained an 80% cash margin for more than five consecutive years — a remarkable consistency through volatile commodity cycles. Group EBITDA of $9.277 billion at a 71% margin underlines the quality of the underlying asset base. Balance Sheet and Capital Returns The 23% surge in operating cash flow enabled Woodside to report free cash flow of $1.889 billion, a sharp turnaround from the prior year. Liquidity increased 38% to $9.3 billion, while net debt of $8.0 billion keeps the net debt/EBITDA ratio at a comfortable 0.9 times. Gearing of 18.2% sits within the company's stated 10-20% target range. The final dividend of 59 US cents per share (fully franked) brought the full-year total to 112 US cents, beating consensus by 9%. Since its merger with BHP Petroleum in 2022, Woodside has returned approximately $11 billion to shareholders through dividends and buybacks. ANALYST REACTIONS: MIXED DESPITE THE BEATS The broker community's response was broadly measured. Morgans is the lone Buy, rating Woodside its preferred large-cap energy stock at a target price of $29.80, citing consistent LNG reliability and attractive franking credits. Citi (Neutral, $26.50) raised its FY2026-27 earnings forecasts by 63% and 36% respectively after incorporating updated Pluto-KGP volume guidance but said it prefers Santos in the near term. Morgan Stanley (Equal-weight, $26.00) noted revenue came in 7% ahead of consensus and is watching Louisiana LNG progress and the pending CEO appointment. Macquarie (Neutral, $25.00) characterised the result as unlikely to be a major catalyst and said it is monitoring the reserve statement and CEO succession. Ord Minnett (Hold, $24.00) raised its target from $23.25 on a 5% reserves upgrade but remains cautious on execution risk and LNG market volatility. UBS (Neutral, $23.10) was the most sceptical, noting 2026 production…
