Alphabet just delivered a very strong quarter and signalled it is going “allin” on AI, but with a spending plan that may feel huge and a bit scary for some investors. What actually happened Alphabet (Google’s parent company) beat expectations on both profit and sales, and passed 400 billion dollars in yearly revenue for the first time. Profit margins stayed healthy, showing the company can still make a lot of money even while investing heavily in new technology. Big AI spending – what it means Management plans to spend around 180 billion dollars in 2026 on data centres, computer chips, and other AI infrastructure – far more than Wall Street expected. This is essentially Alphabet building the “roads and power plants” for AI – expensive up front, but designed to support growth for many years. How the main businesses are doing The cloud business, which powers AI and other services for companies, is one of Alphabet’s fastestgrowing units and had very strong growth. The core Google businesses – Search, YouTube, Maps, Android and others – are still growing solidly, and Search usage actually increased, despite worries that AI might hurt it. Smaller experimental projects (selfdriving, health, other future bets) are still small and not the main driver of the story right now. AI products and partnerships Alphabet’s new Gemini AI is now being used at very large scale and has hundreds of millions of users through its app and APIs. A new deal with Apple means Gemini will help power future AI features on the iPhone, including upgrades to Siri, which should further increase usage and visibility. What this could mean for clients Alphabet is behaving like a longterm winner: strong current earnings, leadership in AI, and a willingness to invest heavily to stay ahead. The tradeoff is more shortterm share price volatility as markets digest the very large spending plans. For investors, this positions Alphabet as a key AI and digital infrastructure holding, but it also means you need to be comfortable with periods of choppier performance while the company invests for future growth.
