Navigating Todays Market Sell-off & Volatility
Today’s sharp sell-off (ASX 200 down ~3.8–4.2%) has been driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East involving Iran, pushing oil prices sharply higher and reigniting stagflation concerns after softer US jobs data.
Navigating Today's Sell-Off: Why Our Core Positioning Holds Up Days like today are uncomfortable. The ASX 200 has taken a sharp leg lower, geopolitical tensions are flaring, and oil prices are spiking. It's natural to feel uneasy — but it's also exactly the kind of environment our 2026 House View was built to withstand. When we set our high-conviction themes earlier this year, we didn't assume smooth sailing. Our base case already factored in choppy markets, sticky inflation, trade tensions, and geopolitical risk — including Middle East escalation as an explicit scenario. Today's price action, while jarring, falls squarely within the range of outcomes we've been positioning for. Here's why we believe our core themes remain well placed: Real assets and commodities are doing their job. Our structural overweights in gold, silver, uranium, copper, and critical minerals were selected precisely because they tend to hold value — or appreciate — when inflation expectations rise and geopolitical uncertainty spikes. An oil price surge reinforces the investment case for nuclear power, energy security, and the broader electrification buildout that underpins several of our highest-conviction positions. Defence and cybersecurity spending doesn't slow down in a crisis — it accelerates. The European defence spending surge we identified as a key theme only gains momentum in an environment of heightened global tension. These are multi-year structural commitments, not discretionary budgets that get cut at the first sign of trouble. Healthcare remains defensive by design. Our positions in quality healthcare names reflect the sector's historically resilient demand profile. People don't defer medical treatment because of a geopolitical headline, and these businesses carry the pricing power to manage inflationary pressures. The AI-energy intersection provides a modern buffer. Unlike past commodity cycles, today's demand for power, data infrastructure, and critical minerals is anchored by a structural AI capex super-cycle. This isn't purely macro-dependent — it's driven by corporate investment commitments already in motion. That provides a floor beneath many of our key exposures even if broader economic growth softens. What we're watching closely. We're not complacent. Our growth-oriented tech and AI positions are the part of the portfolio most exposed to multiple compression if conditions deteriorate further toward genuine stagflation. We flagged this trade-off in our outlook, and it's one we continue to manage actively. If stagflationary pressures were to break — as they did sharply in 1983 and 2023 — these same positions are designed to rotate into leadership during the recovery. The bottom line. Sell-offs are the price of admission for long-term returns. Our thematic approach was never about avoiding volatility — it was about being on the right side of structural forces that persist through it. Today doesn't change that thesis. If anything, it reinforces several of our core convictions. We'll continue to monitor developments closely and will update you if our view shifts materially. In the meantime, stay focused on the bigger picture. Please don't hesitate to call us, that what we are here for! — The MPC Markets Team
