CSL shares in focus after earnings confirm guidance following yesterday’s sell-off
CSL shares are set to be in focus when the ASX opens, after the company released its first-half FY26 earnings overnight, maintaining full-year guidance following a sharp sell-off yesterday driven by leadership uncertainty and earnings concerns.
The result arrives at a sensitive moment for the stock, with investors assessing whether yesterday’s decline was justified by fundamentals or reflects an overreaction to near-term noise. Today’s move follows CSL’s 1H26 earnings result and management update CSL reported first-half revenue of approximately US$8.3bn, down around 4% on a reported basis, with underlying NPATA of roughly US$1.9bn, down 7%. Statutory NPAT fell sharply, reflecting significant restructuring charges and impairments that dominated the headline result but were largely non-cash in nature. Crucially, management maintained FY26 guidance, reaffirming expectations for revenue growth of 2–3% and NPATA growth of 4–7% at constant currency. In the context of heightened downgrade risk heading into the result, this was a meaningful stabilising outcome for the investment case. CSL shares in focus on guidance hold and execution outlook CSL Behring, the group’s largest division, delivered a mixed but stabilising performance. Immunoglobulin (Ig) revenue declined year-on-year due to the impact of US Medicare Part D reforms and tough prior comparables. However, management highlighted that Ig revenue improved relative to the previous half, suggesting the business may have passed its cyclical low. This point is critical, as Ig remains the dominant contributor to group earnings. Albumin revenue declined sharply, reflecting regulatory and pricing changes in China. While this continues to weigh on near-term earnings, the outcome was well-flagged and broadly in line with expectations. Management pointed to early progress from mitigation initiatives, including geographic diversification and partnership arrangements, though acknowledged recovery will be gradual. Growth in newer therapies continues to support the longer-term growth narrative. ANDEMBRY recorded strong early uptake, with more than 1,000 patients now on therapy, while haemophilia products such as HEMGENIX continued to scale. These products provide diversification away from mature plasma products and underpin CSL’s medium-term growth optionality. Seqirus delivered a resilient performance in a challenging vaccine environment. Revenue declined modestly as prior-year avian influenza sales rolled off, but seasonal influenza performance held up despite lower US immunisation rates. The opening of CSL’s new A$1bn Tullamarine cell-based vaccine facility further strengthens CSL’s strategic position in differentiated vaccines and pandemic preparedness. CSL Vifor remained broadly in line with expectations, with nephrology-led growth offset by ongoing pressure in the iron franchise following generic competition. Balance sheet and capital management remain supportive Despite weak statutory earnings, CSL’s financial position remains robust. Operating cash flow rose 3% to approximately US$1.3bn, reinforcing the quality of underlying earnings. The interim dividend was held at US$1.30 per share, and CSL increased its on-market share buyback from US$500m to US$750m. Net debt remains manageable at around 2x EBITDA, preserving balance sheet flexibility and supporting ongoing capital returns. What’s next: execution over sentiment The sharp sell-off yesterday was driven more by sentiment — particularly the unexpected CEO transition — than by a material deterioration in CSL’s earnings outlook. Overnight earnings have confirmed that the core investment thesis remains intact, with guidance maintained and cash generation strong. Looking ahead, investor focus will shift to execution through the second half, particularly stabilisation in Ig, early signs of albumin recovery, continued uptake of newer therapies, and delivery of transformation-related cost savings. Management indicated approximately 60% of FY26 cost savings have already been achieved, providing leverage to earnings as revenue growth normalises. “We remain focused on executing our strategy, delivering on our transformation program, and positioning CSL for sustainable long-term growth,” the board said, reinforcing confidence in the outlook. Recommendation: BUY. With guidance intact, capital returns increased, and sentiment already damaged ahead of the result, CSL offers an attractive risk-reward for long-term investors. The disconnect between near-term noise and long-term fundamentals presents an opportunity to accumulate a high-quality global healthcare leader at an appealing entry point ahead of a potentially stronger second half.
