Same Strategy, Smarter Execution: Changes to MPC approach
Markets in 2026 are behaving differently. Here's how we're adapting the way we buy and sell, without changing what we believe.
If you’ve been watching markets lately, you’ll have noticed something has changed. Stocks are swinging harder, faster, and with less obvious reason. What’s driving it? In large part: the rise of algorithm and AI-powered trading, which can amplify moves in both directions, sometimes dramatically, before human logic has a chance to catch up. We want to be upfront about what that means for us. Our investment philosophy, finding quality assets at reasonable prices, managing risk carefully, and not chasing fads, hasn’t changed. But the way we execute that philosophy has evolved. Think of it this way: we still know where we’re going. We’ve just updated our route to match current road conditions. WHY THE OLD PLAYBOOK NEEDED UPDATING What’s Different About Today’s Markets For years, when a solid stock sold off sharply, buying into the weakness worked well. Markets would overreact, then recover. A disciplined buyer could step in, take a position, and be rewarded. That logic still holds — but the speed and depth of those sell-offs has changed. When algorithms and AI systems all react to the same signals at the same time, dips can go deeper and last longer than fundamentals justify. Early 2026 gave us some vivid examples: precious metals dropped violently in a matter of hours before recovering. Technology stocks that looked cheap became cheaper before bouncing. In this environment, moving too decisively too early — which historically was fine — now carries more short-term risk. The same dynamic applies on the upside. Strong momentum can run further and faster than it used to, driven by the same algorithmic herding. That creates opportunity — but it also means rallies can reverse just as suddenly. OUR RESPONSE Two Practical Changes We’ve Made Here’s exactly what we’re doing differently, and why. CHANGE ONE Buying the Dip — More Patiently, in Four Steps When a quality stock sells off and we want to buy it, we now spread our purchases across four separate tranches rather than buying everything at once. Here’s how it works: If you would like more detail on step 3 & 4, click here for our article "Buy the Dip Without Getting Burned: A Practical Guide CHANGE TWO Holding Winners Longer — With a Safety Net When something in the portfolio is running hard in our favour, we used to sell at a predetermined target price. That worked well in calmer markets. In 2026, it can mean exiting too early when momentum is strong, or holding too long when a sudden reversal hits. Instead, we now use two techniques to manage the exit: THE BOTTOM LINE What Hasn’t Changed It’s worth being explicit about what we’re not changing, because we think it matters. We’re not changing our view of what makes a good investment. We’re not chasing trends or reacting to headlines. What we’re doing is recognising that the mechanics of today’s markets require a more deliberate approach to timing — both on the way in and on the way out. As always, if you have questions about any of this — or want to talk through how it applies to your specific portfolio — please reach out. That’s what we’re here for.
